Most models combine several detection methods in one unit:

  • UV (Ultraviolet) Light — Reveals hidden security threads, fluorescent inks, or marks that glow under UV (usually 365nm wavelength).
  • Magnetic (MG) Sensor — Detects magnetic ink or properties in genuine bills (often with a beep or light indicator).
  • Watermark (WM) / White Light — Illuminates the translucent watermark image visible when held to light.
  • Infrared (IR) — Checks for IR-absorbing or reflecting patterns (on some advanced models).
  • Magnifying Lens — Built-in or attached magnifier (typically 5x to 14x, sometimes 8x or 10x) to inspect micro-printing, fine lines, serial numbers, and intricate patterns that fakes often fail to replicate accurately.
  • Additional — Some include size/thickness detection, LED white light for general viewing, or support for IDs/credit cards/passports.

Power options: Battery-powered (rechargeable USB or AAA), plug-in, or auto on/off for energy saving. Many are portable and lightweight (under 500g).

How to Use

  1. Insert the bill or place it under the device.
  2. Activate UV light to check for glowing security features.
  3. Use the magnetic sensor (if available) — genuine notes usually trigger a positive signal.
  4. Shine white light through for watermark visibility.
  5. Flip to the magnifying lens side to closely examine micro-text and details (e.g., "Bank of Uganda" fine print on UGX notes).
  6. Compare against known genuine bills — most devices give clear pass/fail via lights, beeps, or visual cues.
